Biography
Robert Roest (1992, Leerbroek, the Netherlands) studied at the HKU University of the Arts Utrecht. He has lived and worked in Jersey City, New Jersey, since 2019 and has exhibited, among others, in New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Amsterdam, Antwerp, London, Paris, and Seoul.
His paintings investigate perception, projection, illusion, and representation through serial bodies of work that draw equally from the history of painting and contemporary image culture. By approaching each subject through multiple paintings rather than a single image, Roest examines how meaning shifts through different perspectives and painterly languages. Central to his practice are the questions: Can we trust our senses? Can we believe our eyes? What do we bring ourselves to the act of seeing? While images themselves may remain unchanged, our ways of seeing continually evolve.
